In several years your handset could be running on water. Samsung Electro-Mechanics have announced that it has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that uses H2O. Oh Yung-soo, VP of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ research center had this to say: “When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas. The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.” Other available fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, whereas Samsung’s product only needs water.

The micro-fuel cell generates about 3 watts of electricity, which makes it perfect for mobile devices, giving a handset up to 10 hours of power, twice more than what rechargeable batteries could provide. So when you next quench your thirst, you might consider saving some water for your future handset as well.
